Nemours Children’s Health System is putting on its 8th annual prom for teenage patients with serious illnesses.
More than a hundred young people with be shuttled to the formal event in high performance and classic cars Saturday evening. They’ll have a police escort.
Michell Fulmer is the prom’s organizer and a nutritionist at the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. She says prom can be a bonding experience for teens with ailments like cancer, sickle cell disease or heart disease.
“They get to spend time with peers that are extraordinary kids just like themselves—kids that they see in the waiting room that they might otherwise not engage or interact with, but they actually get the chance to do that here at prom and it actually brings them all a little bit closer together.”
Fulmer says a list of individual donors and local businesses have supplied the cars, formal wear, food and other amenities for the event.
She encourages the public to visit the Nemours Research Building Auditorium at 5:30 to cheer on the kids as they arrive at prom.
