New Castle County’s expanded summer youth employment program will get underway this weekend with an application event.
New Castle County is looking to hire nearly participants for this year’s expanded version of the summer employment program, which runs from June 18th through August 24th.
New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer says the program is a wonderful example of collaboration to help young people throughout the county.
“The summer youth employment program is for youth between the ages of 14 and 20 to work, for a total of 250 hours during the summer months in a paid internship opportunity. They’re paid as New Castle County employees; they earn a minimum wage of $10.10/hr. And we partner will all sorts of entities, non-profits, local businesses and government,” Meyer said.
Meyer adds that in addition to offering low-income county residents paid work, the program aims to give those young people opportunities that could lead to a career.
“This year is particularly special because we’ve expanded the collaboration to include West End Neighborhood House in Wilmington and the City Foundation. And what they’re done is increased the number of job opportunities to 175,” said Meyer.
The first of two application events is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Garfield Park Community Recreation Center in New Castle. Another is scheduled for Wednesday, March 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Appoquinimink Community Recreation Center and Library.
Meyer says applicants should be prepared to take part in a brief interview and are encouraged to dress in business casual attire.
