A 47-year-old New Castle County man has died from the flu — the first flu-related death of the 2017-2018 season, Delaware's Division of Public Health announced Wednesday.

Health officials said the man had multiple underlying health conditions.

Delaware has already had 46-laboratory confirmed cases of the flu since Dec. 2. Fifteen of those cases were hospitalized.

This time last year, the state had 42 cases and 15 hospitalizations.

Health officials are urging Delawareans to get their flu shots.

Local pharmacies, primary care doctors and five state flu shot clinics offer the vaccine.
