New Castle County using PulsePoint app for cardiac arrest resuscitation

Delaware Public Media

New Castle County is using a new app to help save lives during cardiac arrest.

The PulsePoint app is linked to the dispatch computer in the New Castle County 911 center. It warns CPR certified users of a cardiac arrest event in their area, to which they may be able to respond quicker than EMS. It also alerts citizen responders to the location of nearby defibrillators.

New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer says more than 600 people are already using it.

“What it does is it dramatically increases the response time to specific emergency incidents, and that helps to save lives and live in a safer stronger community,” said Meyer.

The New Castle County Recorder of Deeds Technology Fund paid for the initial setup of the PulsePoint app, and will continue to pay its monthly subscription fee.

Meyer says the county wants to improve upon its record 52 lives saved last year.

“We’re trying to increase that number this year. The best way we can do it is by getting more bystanders to learn CPR and to get more people on this PulsePoint app,” said Meyer.

Sussex County has been using PulsePoint for about a year.
