Pet rescue organization wants to reduce wild cat population in Delaware

Forgotten Cats

There are more than 10,000 free-roaming cats in New Castle, Newark and Bear. And one nonprofit pet organization is trying to reduce that number.

If you live in New Castle, Newark or Bear, the no-kill rescue organization Forgotten Cats will help you spay or neuter wild felines in your neighborhood at no cost.

“We deliver the traps, we work with the caretaker, we show them how to set the traps, we show them how to monitor the traps. When the cats are caught we swing by and we pick up the cats and transport them into our shelter where they can be cared for until they can be returned” said Forgotten Cats' president, Felicia Cross.

Forgotten Cats releases the cats back to where they came after they’ve been sterilized, which can significantly reduce wild cat populations within a couple years. And that can be helpful for shelters since most in Delaware are full.

Because of lack of shelter space, 70 percent of wild cats and kittens that arrive in a shelter are killed. These cats also take up shelter space that could be used for surrendered pets that need new homes.

Reducing free-roaming cat populations is the best way to lower euthanasia rates and free up space in Delaware animal shelters, according to Cross.
