The Red Clay School District is closing one of its charter schools.
The district’s school board voted Wednesday night not to renew the Delaware College Preparatory Academy’s charter.
The vote came after a committee of district officials recommended the Wilmington school be shuttered over low enrollment as well as financial and academic struggles. DCPA met just six of the oversight committee’s 16 criteria for renewal.
The seven-year-old charter, which serves grades kindergarten through fifth grade, has seen declining enrollment, falling to 186 students this school year. It also has little money in the bank and test scores below the average for Red Clay students across the board.
Red Clay is the only district in the state that authorizes its own charter schools rather than the state. The state closed two city charter schools – Moyer Academy and Reach Academy - at the end of last school year.
