Robo bomb threat calls lead to several school evacuations in Delaware

Delaware Public Media

Delaware State Police are investigating bomb threats made to several schools throughout the state Monday.

Evacuations of the schools lasted between 45 minutes to three hours but officials say nothing out of the ordinary or suspicious was located.

The evacuated schools were Dover High School, Smyrna Elementary, Indian River High School in Dagsboro, Caesar Rodney High School in Camden, H.B DuPont Middle School in Hockessin, Seaford Middle School, and Ross Elementary in Milford.

Police say the bomb threats came in between 9:30 and 10:00 Monday morning and the phone calls were from a robotic style or computer generated voice.  Delaware State Police spokesperson Gary Fournier says that is not typical.

“There have been instances in the past where maybe just one school has received something like this but the nature of this being statewide and all around the same time period is obviously an unusual circumstance,” he says. “We are taking this very seriously.”

Similar robotic calls were also made to schools in Maryland and Virginia.

Fournier says the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
