The second annual Delaware Latino Summit is coming later this month.
The theme for this year’s event October 22nd at Wilmington’s Chase Center is “Connecting Through Education for a Brighter Future.”
Last year’s summit helped galvanize support behind legislation that allows undocumented immigrants access to driver privilege cards.
"We want to connect the state agencies, the non-profit community organizations to the Hispanic community, but at the same time, pushing the Delaware public policy agenda," said co-chair of the Delaware Hispanic Commission Javier Torrijos.
Specifically, he says he hopes to start laying groundwork for legislative change around increasing the number of culturally competent teachers who can effectively work with English language learner students. Supporting monolingual parents through robust adult education programs is also key, he adds.
Last year, around 300 people attended the summit. This year, organizers anticipate the number will be closer to 500. There will be six breakout sessions, which include Housing, Social Justice and Health and Social Services.
