SEPTA postpones papal rail pass announcement

Pope Francis visits Philadelphia in September

SEPTA canceled a planned announcement Monday on the resumption of rail passes for the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia.

No explanation was given and SEPTA said it would reschedule the announcement for later this week.

A higher volume of visitors than anticipated crashed the site selling SEPTA Regional Rail tickets for the Papal visit last Monday.

The agency says the site received about 900,000 visits, and approximately 1,700 transactions were attempted per second.

Most transactions were not completed so most of the passes are still available for customers to purchase when sales resume.

More than 1 million visitors are expected in Philadelphia where Pope Francis will attend a world meeting of Roman Catholic families. The Pope will also celebrate an outdoor Mass.

SEPTA’s express commuter rail service will operate from Wilmington and Newark, Saturday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 27.
