After sunny skies and warm weather yesterday, wintry weather is starting to hit Northern Delaware Tuesday morning.
The changeover from rain to sleet and snow is underway in northern New Castle County - while rain continues as you move south.
Walter Drag, with the National Weather Service, says we could see 1-3 inches of snow and sleet .
“It looks to me the amounts (of precipitation) will be a little less than we expected yesterday. But it’s still going to be hazardous travel, especially between 7a.m.-10a.m,” said Drag.
DelDOT says it has crews are pre-staged at points along major routes, ready to begin applying salt as the rain transitions to snow.
Kent and Sussex Counties are expected to see minimal accumulations, if any, with precipitation remaining mostly in the form of rain there.
Drag says a low pressure system should push northwards and the snow could taper off before 11 a.m., with sunny skies later today.
Though the severe weather won’t be finished. Drag says high winds are expected to gust throughout the day and that could cause other issues
“Northwest winds will be gusting up to 45 mph. It’s possible that there will be a few scattered power outages and a few tree limbs down late this morning and this afternoon," said Drag.
The severe weather should move out by Thursday night, though.
