Sportsmen Against Hunger starts taking donations

Delaware Public Media

Delaware’s Division of Fish and Wildlife is accepting donated venison during the state’s deer hunting season.

Deer and Furbearer Biologist Emily Boyd said several butcher shops and Delaware Department of Natural Resources coolers are accepting donations through the end of deer season in January.

"When the hunter has a deer and drops it off, they call us and we move the deer to the processors," Boyd said.

The donated meat is then distributed to over 30 statewide community organizations.

The program had around 16,800 lbs of venison donated last year from over 580 donations.

This is the first year that hunters can harvest deer on Sundays on certain public lands.

Boyd said it’s unclear if that will affect donations. She expects the program to see between 17-18,000 lbs of venison donated this season.
