Sussex County Council bans firearms in all county public buildings

The Sussex County Council voted unanimously this week to ban firearms in all county buildings.

“[That's] including our buildings here on The Circle and also other buildings throughout the County we own, including the West Complex and then three county libraries that we own and operate with county staff,” said Sussex County Administrator Todd Lawson

Lawson says the new ordinance matches state code verbatim, banning people from bringing firearms into public buildings.

“That’s just the last part of a larger initiative that the County has undertaken in the last few months to improve security throughout the County’s facilities,” said Lawson.

Lawson adds there are a few exceptions to the ban. Those exceptions include police officers and anyone who has a concealed carry permit.

He also notes the ordinance takes effect immediately.
