Democrats will maintain control of the Insurance Commissioner’s office.

New Castle Co. sheriff  Trinidad Navarro topped Republican Jeff Cragg, outpacing Cragg by a nearly 20 percent margin.

Navarro said he knew Cragg had an advantage because of his experience in the insurance industry, but believes he brought something else to the table.

“My advantage over him was operating a government office that’s lean, that’s under budget, that gives back to the community - and I don’t mean just giving back with my volunteer hours with my church and little league and things like that,” Navarro said. “We actually gave money back to people who were the rightful owner of dollars after the sheriff sale.”

Navarro said it’s incredibly meaningful for him to fill an office he knows is important, based on personal experience working with his father.

“He was an agent for 40 years,” Navarro said. “And I always remember him saying that if there was an issue, I’d go to the insurance commissioner’s office and get it fixed. And here’s this kid from New Castle, in his father’s footsteps. I was an agent I worked for him and here I am today, insurance commissioner elect.”

Navarro said lowering insurance rates in the First State - from car insurance to personal health care plans under Obamacare - will be among his top priorities.

“Day one the first thing we’re going to do is make the office consumer-centric and concentrate on helping everyday Delawareans, that’s what the office is designed to do,” Navarro said. “And under my administration, that will be our top priority.”

When he takes office in January, Navarro will succeed Karen Weldon-Stewart who he defeated in September’s Democratic Primary.

But before then he’s looking forward to spending time with his family, taking a family trip to Disney World to make up for lost time he’s spent campaigning over the last two years.
