The University of Delaware’s first trip to NCAA Division I baseball tournament since 2001 is over, and it ended in heart-breaking fashion.
The Blue Hens were eliminated Saturday, defeated by Arizona 6-5 in 12 innings.
A solo homer from the Wildcats’ Alphonso Rivas in the top of the 12th was the difference –finally putting UD away.
A 4-run 7th inning rally put Arizona up 5-1. But Delaware fought back. The Hens got two back in the 8th on a two out, two run single by Jeremey Ake, and then forced extra innings with a two out, two run single by Jordan Glover in the 9th.
The two teams also waited out a 2 hour-plus rain delay in the 10th before Arizona won it in the 12th.
UD ends the season with a 34-23 record – their most wins since 2002.
