Workshops aim to help farmers with food safety

Delaware Public Media

The University of Delaware and the Delaware Department of Agriculture are holding several workshops to help First State farmers learn more about food safety and how to comply with federal regulations.

Holly Porter, with the Delaware Department of Agriculture, said the workshops help food growers develop food safety plans in accordance with the Food Safety Modernization Act, ushered in by the Obama administration.

"Many of the trainings and tips and things that will be learned can be used on any sized farm. So a small four-acre operation can gain a lot from these food safety plans," Porter said.

The workshops are planned for March 16 and 17 at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington.

Three other trainings geared toward smaller growers who sell to farmers’ markets, fruit stands and restaurants are planned for March 11 in Georgetown, March 18 in Dover and March 26 in Newark.
